  4. PRE – STAGE - AIMS: This stage prepares SS by getting them to think about the topic or situation before they read listen, speak or write about it. In other words, it gives SS a purpose to read, to listen, to speak or to write. It also gets SS to relate to what they already know about the topic. - Activities • Vocab tasks where the T pre-teaches vocab to aid comprehension and set the scene or explain the context. • Prediction tasks where SS guess what they are about to practice. • Brainstorming or discussion tasks where SS collect all their ideas on the topic. - In this stage the T's role is to get the SS thinking about what they are going to read/hear/talk or write about before they do it, so they are prepared and actively using their brains. The T has to think of and set up the pre-task, give clear instructions and monitor the task
  5. WHILE – STAGE - AIMS: This stage gives SS a guide or framework to help them practice the target skill of the lesson. In other words, it helps SS to do the skill better, more accurately and thoroughly. - Activities: • Comprehension tasks where SS answer questions based on the text. • Ordering tasks where SS show that they have understood by putting pictures or statements into the same sequence as the text. • Transformation tasks where SS take one format and transfer it to another. - This stage also externalizes the process, so the T can check, through the tasks, if the SS have understood. The tasks in this stage are both “teaching aids" and “diagnostic tests". - In this stage, apart from setting up the activity, the T doesn’t have to do a lot of teaching because the SS work on the tasks by themselves, working individually or in pairs/groups. Instead, the T has to do a lot of monitoring and assist weaker SS who have difficulty completing the task.
  6. POST – STAGE: AIMS: This stage is like the follow-up stage. After SS have practiced the target skill in the While-stage,they do an extension activity. This helps SS take the information or whatever they have produced in the While-stage, and do something meaningful with it. This stage is usually an “information transfer” production type-exercise where SS respond to what they have just learnt. - Activities: • For listening and reading, the post task usually involves the productive skills (speaking or writing). • For speaking, the post task usually involves writing it up. For example, if the speaking task is conducting a questionnaire for their friends, the post task could be writing up the results in a short paragraph. It may also involve an indirect correction session where the teacher gives feedback on what SS have said. • For writing, the post task usually involves correcting and rewriting. - In this stage, the T once again gives instructions, monitors and evaluates SS'performance
